About Us

Beautiful scenery. Friendly folks. Comfortable stay.  That's what you will find at the Machias River Inn.

Here is a little bit about us and why Machias, Maine should be your next vacation destination.

The Inn

The Machias River Inn was built in 1987 by natives of Machias. Ownership was transferred in 2006 and it remains a locally owned and operated place of hospitality.  Originally named the Machias Motor Inn, it was built with convenience and accessibility in mind, harkening back to the 1950s when motor inns were popular.

Today the inn houses 39 rooms overlooking the Machias River.  Each room has walk out access to the riverview.  Make sure you plant yourself right there at sunrise.  The view is spectacular in the morning.  Grab a cup of coffee from our in room Keurig coffeemaker and sit riverside. Let the beauty of nature wash over you.

The Staff

We want to make your visit comfortable and full of memories and our staff is ready to serve you.  All of our employees are from the Machias area including our manager, Shelley Roberts. Shelley and many of our staff grew up in Downeast Maine which enables us to give you the best recommendations of what to do and where to eat when planning your visit to Machias and the surrounding areas.

The River

Machias (pronounced "muh-CHI-us") is a Native American word meaning "bad little falls." The falls, which can be located in the center of our town, empty into the Machias River. The Machias River has a rich history of fishing, logging, and shipbuilding.  It was also the site for the first naval battle of the American Revolution which we celebrate during our annual Margaretta Days.  The history of Machias is depicted beautifully in the art by Robert Goodier which you will find in each room at our inn.
