Things to Do
Near Machias

Adventure in Every Direction

Machias sits at the heart of one of the most unspoiled stretches of coastline in the entire Northeast. The Bold Coast, puffin colonies, wild blueberry barrens, Revolutionary War history, and some of Maine's best paddling are all within reach. The Machias River Inn puts you right in the middle of it.

This part of Maine isn't overrun with tourists. That's exactly the point. Downeast Washington County rewards travelers who go looking — and what they find is a region that feels genuinely wild, genuinely local, and genuinely unlike anywhere else.

World-Class Birding

Washington County is a premier birding destination. Moosehorn National Wildlife Refuge, Petit Manan, and the Machias River Corridor host hundreds of species. Bald eagles and osprey are regulars right on the river behind the Inn.

Day Trip · Lubec

West Quoddy Head State Park

The easternmost point in the United States. The iconic candy-striped lighthouse at Quoddy Head marks the tip of the country. Whale watching, harbor porpoises, and dramatic coastal scenery make this a must-do day trip. About 45 minutes from the Inn.

Local Life in Machias

Machias punches well above its weight when it comes to community events. Plan your visit around one of these and you'll experience something that feels genuinely local — because it is.

Annual · August

Machias Wild Blueberry Festival

Nearly 50 years of celebrating Maine's wild blueberries. Three days in August with pie-eating contests, a road race, farm tours, over 200 artisan vendors, live entertainment, lobster rolls, and everything blueberry. One of the most beloved local festivals in Downeast Maine.

Annual · June

Margaretta Days Festival

Hosted by the Machias Historical Society to celebrate the town's pivotal role in the American Revolution. Period reenactments of the 1775 Battle of the Margaretta, live music, history presentations, crafts, and food. One of the biggest draws in June in Washington County.

Year-Round

University of Maine at Machias

UMM's 242-acre campus hosts cultural events, performances, and public programming throughout the year. It also holds the distinction of being the first university in the U.S. to see the sunrise each morning — a fitting title for Sunrise County.

Day Trips

Worth the Drive

The Inn is perfectly positioned for exploring the broader Bold Coast and Downeast region. Here's what's within easy reach.

~45 min

Lubec & Campobello Island

Lubec is the easternmost town in the US. Cross the bridge to Campobello Island, New Brunswick — home to Franklin D. Roosevelt's summer cottage and stunning coastal scenery. West Quoddy Head Lighthouse is the cherry on top.

~1 hr

Eastport

The easternmost city in the United States, sitting on Moose Island in Cobscook Bay. A charming working waterfront with galleries, restaurants, and one of the largest tidal changes in the world — up to 26 feet. Worth a full day.

~1.5 hrs

Acadia National Park

The crown jewel of the Maine coast is about 90 minutes southwest. The Machias River Inn makes a great alternative base — quieter, more affordable, and a completely different feel than the busy Bar Harbor scene.

~30 min

Jonesport & Beals Island

A classic working Maine fishing village connected by bridge to Beals Island. Lobster boats, dramatic scenery, and the gateway to Great Wass Island. See Maine the way it actually is.

Every Season Has Something

Spring

Lupines bloom across the roadsides in June. Birding season hits its peak. Black flies are a reality — bring repellent for the woods, though the river breeze keeps them at bay.

Summer

Peak season for puffin tours, hiking, kayaking, and the Wild Blueberry Festival in August. Longest days of the year — sunrise over the river is spectacular.

Fall

Blueberry barrens turn crimson in September — one of Maine's most underrated fall foliage displays. Crowds disappear and the Bold Coast is at its most dramatic.

Winter

Quiet and wild. Snowmobiling on the Sunrise Trail, ice fishing, and the kind of solitude that's hard to find anywhere else. The river under snow is something else.
